Master of Education Degree in Physical Education

 

Educational Goals

The Exercise and Sports Science (ESS) division in the Department of HPER offers a Master of Education in Physical Education degree with several options. Students may choose to major in Physical Education and seek a minor, all-level physical education certification, or one of three specializations: 1) Educational Foundations, 2) Exercise Science, and 3) Sport Management. Graduates with an advanced degree in Physical Education will: a) demonstrate knowledge and application of research-based literature in each of their respective disciplines; b) critically analyze research in the field of physical education and their respective discipline; c) Demonstrate knowledge of history and trends in their chosen field of study.

 

Employment Options

There is an increasing need for fitness professionals with an advanced degree in Exercise and Sports Science or related field as: 1) the nation grapples with obesity and diabetes epidemics; 2) physicians place more emphasis on preventive care; 3) the population continues to age; and 4) participation in organized sports grows. Thus, graduates with a master’s degree in Physical Education will be in demand and able to work in a all sectors of the workforce, including federal, state and local government health agencies, health organizations, public schools, and universities, as physical educators, coaches, grant specialists/coordinators, and directors of health clubs and wellness programs.

They are the authors of numerous peer-reviewed publications, textbooks, and grants, serve as officers/board members in professional associations, and set the high standards for students in the Exercise and Sports Science Program at Texas State University. Financial Assistance

Graduate Teaching and Research Assistantships. The Department of HPER annually awards competitive graduate assistantships to highly qualified individuals interested in serving as either research or teaching assistants. Selection is based on the students’ academic background and professional experience. For more information, contact Dr. John Walker.

Admission Requirements

·   A minimum GPA of 2.75 on the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework leading to a baccalaureate, or

·   Conditional Admission may be granted to applicants with a GPA of 2.5 to 2.74 on the last 60 hr of undergraduate course work.

2 courses chosen from: PE 5309, Biomechanics for Exercise & Sports Science; PE 5302, Issues in Athletic Training & Sports Medicine; and PE 5305, Advanced Tests & Measurements

Supporting Courses (6 hours)

Thesis and Non-Thesis Options: Students who choose the: 1) thesis option are required to complete 30 hours of course work and 6 hours of thesis work; and 2) the non-thesis option are required to complete 36 hours of course work, including 6 additional hours of free electives.

Sport Management Specialization (36-hour Non-thesis & 30-hour Thesis options)

They are required to take the course listed above except for PE 5345); and 2) the non-thesis option are required to complete 36 hours of course work, including 6 semester hours of supporting course work and 3 semester hours of free electives.
