Vision Statement, Mission Statement, and Goals
 
Vision
To achieve and maintain national and state-wide recognition for developing innovative teaching, research and service programs that both explore problems and provide solutions to timely and cutting-edge public and community health and quality of life issues. To this end, faculty in the Department of HPER will be recognized:
·         For envisioning, developing and implementing undergraduate programs that produce exceptional students who are prepared to work in fitness, wellness, recreation, exercise science, athletic training, and health and physical education professions and venues throughout the country and state.
·         For envisioning, developing and implementing graduate programs that produce exceptional leaders in the broad fields of health, physical education and recreation. Graduates of these programs will have the knowledge and skills necessary to engage in advanced clinical practice, program planning and evaluation, supervision and administration, and/or to contribute to the field through discipline-specific research and scholarship.
·         For producing research that explores the problems and solutions associated with emerging local, state and national health concerns.
·         As leaders in innovative, evidenced-based programs designed to address emerging local, state and national public health concerns.
Mission
Through innovative teaching, research and service focused on the professional practice of fitness, wellness, recreation, exercise science, athletic training, and health and physical education, the Department of HPER provides graduate and undergraduate students with the knowledge, skills and awareness necessary to enhance their own lives, the lives of others, and the community at large. The department also strives to promote health and wellness on campus and in the surrounding communities by offering both the Personal Fitness and Wellness component of the university’s core curriculum and research-based community programs throughout Central Texas.
Goals
·         Graduates will model healthy behaviors consistent with life-long fitness and wellness.
·         Graduates will, when relevant, successfully pass certification examinations in their respective academic fields.
·         Graduates will secure employment in the professions in which they have been professionally trained.
·         Graduates will model professionalism by engaging in ethical behavior, participating actively in professional organizations, and remaining informed about disciplinary trends.
·         Graduates will develop cultural competency in order to work successfully with diverse populations.
·         Graduates will demonstrate knowledge and skills in planning and evaluating programs in their specific fields of study; in communicating and collaborating with students, clients and professional peers; in critical thinking; and in evidence-based research and decision making.
·         Faculty, current students, and graduates will produce research that addresses important disciplinary questions and offers the potential to enhance lives.
·         Faculty, current students and graduates will provide service intended to advance the principles of health, wellness, and recreation in the university, community, state and nation.
