PFW/PE 1100 Activity Courses

Physical Fitness and Wellness (PFW) and PE Physical Activity Courses

All physical activity classes conducted at Texas State are classified in two areas, which include Physical Fitness and Wellness (PFW) or PE 1100 level activity courses. These courses are conducted and coordinated by the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department of Texas State University. Texas State University currently requires all students to successfully complete two PFW courses for graduation requirement. Each semester over 5,000 students participate in over 40 physical activity and leisure activity courses.

Physical Fitness and Wellness Goals

Texas State offers its students a fairly unique educational opportunity. Specifically, the overarching goal of these courses is to enhance excellence for all students by conveying the importance of maintaining health and wellness both during and after their academic endeavors.

Specific educational goals:
 Students will:
1) be able to successfully perform at a level that ensures enjoyment, safety, and health benefits for fitness and leisure activities over a lifetime;
2) be able to correctly and safely perform all skills necessary for regular participation and enjoyment of the game or activity;
3) have engaged in sufficient activity over the course of the semester to improve health-related components of fitness, e.g., cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition;
 4) understand basic strategies, rules, etiquette, and sportsmanship appropriate for the participation in a variety of activities;
 5) develop positive self-management and social skills needed to work independently or with others in physical activity and work settings;
6) adopt positive lifestyle behaviors and attitudes that will lead to such health outcomes as weight control, positive body image, and reduced stress.

The vast majority of the PFW classes are designed to be 50 minutes in length two times per week. However there are classes conducted once per week and last for one hour and forty minutes. Additionally the PFW program offers classes that are conducted at off campus facilities and will require an additional expense above the normal tuition expense. See course listings on the sidebar and on CATS to obtain the exact cost.

All students enrolled in a PFW class will have optional access to locks, lockers, uniforms and equipment. These items can be accessed through the equipment and laundry room of Jowers and can be obtained by presenting your student ID.

PE 1100 Activity Courses

We currently have over 1400 students majoring in undergraduate and graduate level programs in HPER. As one of the leading HPER institutions in the State of Texas we are represented by a vast amount of talented faculty who has received awards and accolades at the State, National and International levels. Our PE Activity program offers a variety of PE 1100 courses that are required of ESS and AT majors.

In addition to having the same educational goals as stated for the PFW program, these courses also teach students:
1) how to effectively relay activity-related information to others;
2) how to create a positive, non-threatening environment that encourages physical activity;
3) how to implement and manage safe and optimal activities;
4) the importance of modeling positive health-related behaviors and attitudes.
In short, promoting the health and wellness of students, while also instilling the skills, knowledge and behaviors necessary for them to live a healthy life, are values emphasized throughout the department of HPER.
