Tinker served as Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at Brooke Army Medical Center from 1982 to 1984 where he was twice recognized for his exceptional performance.  He has been at Southwest Texas and Texas State University since 1984 and served as the Director of Employee Wellness from 1984-1988, and Director of the Exercise Performance Laboratory from 1984-2000.  He was a voluntary assistant cross country and track coach at Southwest Texas from 1985-1988 and helped win three Gulf Star Conference titles. 

 

From 1985 to 1988 Tinker was a sub-committee member for the Governor's Commission on Physical fitness that developed the Fit Youth Today Program. Tinker has been a lecturer and examiner for the USA Track and Field Level II Coaching Certification Program since 1988. He served as the Vice Chair of the Governor's (for Governor Ann Richards) Commission for Physical Fitness in Texas from 1993-1994.

   

Tinker is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and certified as an ACSM Program Director. He is a former two-time president of the Texas regional chapter of ACSM (1987 & 1994). He served on the national ACSM Board of Trustees from 1998-2001. In the fall of 2003, he was a Guest Researcher at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity. In 2005, he was named an Outstanding Alumnus of Clear Creek High School in League City, TX.

   

Dr. Murray served on a five-year study intervention (HEALTHY) as a Co-I (Roberto Trevino, M.D., PI) funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to prevent Type-2 diabetes in middle school minority students in San Antonio, TX and nationwide. He also worked with Roger Rodriguez (District Coordinator of Health/PE Wellness) of the San Antonio ISD (SAISD) as a consultant on a three-year grant to upgrade middle and high school physical education programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education¹s Carol M. White Physical Education Program.

   

Dr. Murray has worked with the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) and D.W. Rutledge *Executive Director) since 2003 to promote continuing education experiences via the Professional Development Cooperative (PDC) for coaches. He has worked with his graduate student Kampol Surapiboonchai (Ph.D. Program in Educational Leadership) and San Antonio Sports to promote physical activity and wellness via the Dreams for Youth ­ Athlete and Wellness Development Study (DFY-AWDS). He is also developing research projects in cooperation with physicians in the Family Sports Medicine Fellowship Program in San Antonio at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital and the Sports Medicine Associates of San Antonio.

   

Dr. Murray has chaired 13 master¹s theses and served on a total of 29 theses and dissertation committees since 1984. He has authored or co-authored 7 books, 9 book chapters, 25 refereed journal articles, 30 edited articles, and 53 published abstracts. He has also been involved in over 90 professional meeting presentations and 40 invited talks.
