PE 3320 - Project 1

Sport Activity Analysis Project

For this project you are to select a sport activity, video this activity and analyze its specific components for your mid-term paper (Written in APA Style - Web Site) assignment.

You are to choose a 2-D activity that you are relatively familiar with and video the movement from the side or frontal view (DR. PANKEY WILL GIVE YOU DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO DO THIS IN A SEPARATE HANDOUT). Your video will be used to clearly show the activity movement sequence. Each student will be responsible for 1) a term paper of their assigned activity and 2) a movement analysis printout from the Motion Analysis program in the Biomechanics lab (DR. PANKEY WILL SHOW YOU HOW TO PERFORM AN ANALYSIS OF YOUR ACTIVITY OF INTEREST).

Written Paper

The project paper must be broken up into various parts. You are required to include the following in you written analysis:

A. An introduction.
B. A description of each phase (4 phases minimum) of the activity (to be titled by the author. e.g.: Set, Swing, Contact and Follow Through Phase.)
C. Within each phase, you will need to include the biomechanical aspects of the sequential movements. For example, you may include:
1. Primary muscles being used within each phase.
2. Primary muscle contractions within each phase of the movement (concentric, eccentric, etc).
3. Movement analysis within each phase (extension of arms, elevation of shoulders, etc).
4. Techniques within each phase (guidelines to proper performance).
5. Mechanical principles (2 -minimum) within each phase of the movement.
D. Training procedures used to develop competency.
E. Conclusions. (e.g: practical application for life long enjoyment, future considerations.

The conclusion is your chance to show what you have learned. There is no format for this section but possible topics could also include:
a. Common errors
b. Proper execution of skill (what makes something right or wrong)
c. Error correction procedures.
d. Specific strengths needed for skill.

The basic goal of the concluding section is to answer the following questions:
a. What is the best way to perform this skill?
b. Why is this the best way?
c. What factors need to be considered when teaching this skill?
